How to prepare your car for a wash visit

Define the task first

Before visiting, describe your result: refresh bodywork after a trip, remove interior dust or treat a specific stain. A package name may not explain its contents. Ask for the work list and separately check boot, mats, inside glass and door jambs. For deeper cleaning, read what to discuss when choosing interior deep cleaning. Do not add that service automatically merely because everyday belongings have accumulated.

Clear the areas to be cleaned

Remove documents, money, electronics, glasses and door-pocket items. Check cupholders, under-seat space and boot. Collecting everything into a bag beforehand is easier than moving it at the entrance. Decide who removes child seats, organisers and removable covers, whether their cleaning is included and who replaces them. Check a removed child seat’s reinstallation against its instructions: interior cleaning alone does not confirm correct fitting.

Share material information

Mention film, protection, fresh repairs and damage on the body. For the interior, report fabric, real or synthetic leather and non-standard trim. Say if the exact material is unknown: visual similarity is not enough to choose a product. Show problem areas and explain previous cleaning attempts. A photo of the product package is more useful than ‘chemicals’. The film-covered car washing guide helps discuss protection features.

Check preparation for your particular model

Before an automatic wash, open the car manual. Volvo, for example, separately describes rain-sensor and protruding-equipment preparation, and closing windows, doors and boot. These instructions apply to a specific model and installation type; do not transfer the whole sequence to another car. Establish who makes necessary setting changes. If a setting is unclear, stop and ask staff before washing rather than experimenting on a moving conveyor.

Define the order’s limits

At handover, jointly inspect visible chips, scratches and trim damage. Take general and close-up photos of disputed areas if needed. Agree which extras require consent and how you will be contacted. State whether closed compartments may be opened and remaining items moved. If you do not want fragrance or dashboard gloss, say so explicitly: record preferences with the service list instead of explaining at collection.

Prepare a short handover note

A useful note takes a few lines: car model, chosen work, material features, problem areas, no unapproved extras and contact details. Recheck expected readiness and collection. Allow time for post-wash inspection and keep essential belongings during the wait. This helps staff understand the task and you compare the result with the actual order, without expectations no one discussed.
