Pressure washing: reduce the risk to your car
Check two manuals, not one tip
Before washing, you need the car’s rules and the equipment manual. Permitted settings depend on the machine, nozzle and surface. Advice to hold the lance at a certain distance is not a universal guarantee. Even on one car, painted metal, seals, cameras and protection film edges need different attention.
For example, the 2026 Volvo V60 manual specifies a minimum distance for that model and lists sensitive areas separately. This does not permit applying its parameters to another car or machine. If manuals impose different restrictions, do not guess a compatible combination: ask the equipment manufacturer or wash provider.

Inspect the body and prepare the area
Show staff chips, peeling paint, damaged seals, loose trim and film edges. Mention recent paint or repairs. Do not direct a strong jet at a questionable area to test whether it can withstand it. If the coating condition is uncertain, start with advice and gentler cleaning.
Close windows, doors and sunroofs, and remove obstructing accessories as the car manual requires. Position the hose so it does not rub the body. Ensure no people or animals are in the jet area. Follow the equipment manual’s protective equipment and electrical safety rules.
Choose the mode before aiming at the car
Check the nozzle fitted and whether it is permitted for the car. A machine’s car mode does not make every interchangeable nozzle suitable. A concentrated jet for hard household surfaces should not automatically be used on bodywork or tyres. Set the permitted mode as instructed first, then begin.
Move the jet smoothly without dwelling on one defect. Hold the handle securely and do not reach for the roof from an unstable position. If dirt remains, stop and reconsider preparation or cleaning. Do not compensate for unsuitable products by putting the nozzle against the surface.
Identify sensitive areas in advance
Volvo’s manual separately notes cameras, locks, air intakes and other sensitive places where the jet must not be aimed directly. For an EV, follow charging-port rules; Tesla Model Y, for example, has its own washing and Car Wash Mode requirements. Check availability and activation for the specific car.
Do not turn an ordinary body wash into DIY flushing of the engine bay or electrical connections. Film also needs its manufacturer’s and installer’s guidance. At a self-service wash, read programme labels first and ask staff about unfamiliar modes.
Finish by checking, not increasing pressure
Rinse detergent fully using a permitted method and dry the clean surface. If you see a lifted film edge, moving trim or a coating change, stop treating the area immediately. Record the condition and consult a specialist. Another pass with a stronger jet may complicate damage assessment.
At an unfamiliar Baku wash, describe the car’s features and agree the process in advance. Preparing for a visit reduces decisions on site. Before leaving, use the post-wash check: exterior components should be secure, visibility clear and required functions operating normally. Follow the car manual if warnings appear.
